Nimba History
Nimba County is one of the counties created in the early sixties, 1964 by president Tubman. Nimba along with Bong and Lofa County, was referred to those days as the central province. Nimba County is the second populated county in the country. And it's one of the richest in natural and human resources. It's said that for over 30 years, the county provided over of quarter of Liberia's income from operation of its mines in Yekepa. As the map dictates, Nimba is one of the mountainous counties in Liberia. Infact, the highest mountain in Liberia, Mount Nimba is located in this populous county. Nimba got its name from this mountain, Neinbaa ton, Neinbaa mountain. Since the creation of these new counties, many other
counties have been created by the government. Liberia now has 15 political
sub-divisions referred to as " Counties". Nimba's first leader or Superintendent was the late Gabriel G. Farngalo. Gabriel was one of the first indigenous Liberians to obtain higher education. He was a product of John Hopkins and University of Wisconsin Madison. He was a pretty smart man for his time.
