UNICCO History

The idea of UNICCO was first conceived in April 1977 in New York City by Nimba students in the United States. As the number of Nimbaians in the United States grew, there was need for an independent organization that would address the needs of both students and ordinary Nimbaians.

On May 9, 1979, the two existing Nimba Student Associations of New York and Georgia, merged to form one central organization called "UNICCO, United Nimba Citizens' Council" making it one of the first African non-profit organizations in the United States. Its founders cleverly defined the following principles and objectives for the organization:

To create an environment fostering better understanding among Nimbaians in the Americas, as well as seeking to improve the economic, educational, and political opportunities for the people of Nimba County.

To create an atmosphere in which to hold intelligent and discussion of issues relating to our welfare both in the United States and in Nimba County.

To encourage and stimulate scholarly achievement among ourselves and to strive for spiritual enlightenment and moral integrity within our country.

To associate among ourselves and to provide for those Nimbaians who may be in need of assistance in seeking the purpose for which they have come to the United States; and,

To provide for an exchange of ideas and philosophies by sharing cultural and social activities with those from other counties and countries.

Since its foundation, the organization has gradually grown. There are local chapters in several states. Atlanta, Georgia, is our headquarters. Nimbaians across the country observe UNICCO's anniversary yearly in the month of May. Local chapters interested in hosting the anniversary programs are required to apply in advance because of competition. If no chapter requests to host any of our meetings, the national leader designates one or the meeting is held at the headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

UNICCO is very grateful to its founders, members and supporters.
